Singers' Session: A Tribute to Peadar McNamara
MC: John Condon, Spancilhill Singers' Club
Temple Gate Hotel - Sat 30th May @ 9pm
Peadar McNamara, who passed away in 2011, will be fondly remembered at this year’s Fleadh Nua Singers’ Session in Ennis. A founding member of the Ennis Singers’ Club more than 30 years ago, Peadar made an enduring contribution to Irish traditional song and culture.
Friends, fellow singers, and a new generation of performers will gather for a special night in his honour. Known for his big heart and boundless energy, Peadar devoted himself to many causes throughout his life, from campaigning to save Ennis Hospital to championing civil and community rights, while also collecting, preserving, and sharing songs and stories.
His acclaimed album Rare Songs, Quare Songs, Clare Songs & Comic Verse remains popular today, a testament to his passion for tradition and storytelling.
The evening will feature a special performance by his daughter Paula, joined by his wife Mary and other family members, in a heartfelt tribute to Peadar: the singer, historian, teacher, artist, trade unionist, tireless campaigner, and above all, a man who brought people together.
Festival chairman Frank Whelan notes that the Fleadh Nua Singers’ Session has long been one of the standout highlights of the 10‑day programme, celebrated for showcasing some of Ireland’s finest vocal talent. The evening will be hosted by John Condon of the Spancilhill Singers’ Club, who promises a night that is both memorable and deeply moving, an occasion not to be missed.
